French Wine Society Membership Giveaway!

Vinted on June 4, 2013 binned in giveaways

UPDATE: The giveaway is now closed. Thanks for the awesome responses! I’ve contacted the winners via email, so they’ll be enjoying some French wine learnings in short order. For those who did NOT win but are still interested in an FWS membership, the French Wine Society has graciously offered to supply a discount code. If you order a membership via their website and use the discount code “winedude” (all lower case, no quotation marks) during checkout, you’ll get a 10% discount on your purchase. The discount code expires on June 30th, so get cracking!

———————————————————————-

This week, I’m partnering with the venerable French Wine Society, purveyors of well-regarded wine education, certifications and study trips, for one of the biggest giveaways we’ve had to date here on 1WD!

We’ll be giving away five (!) one-year memberships to the French Wine Society, valued at $100 each. Membership in the FWS gives you access to wine education webinars produced by some of the top Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers in the business, a guide to pronunciation of French wine terms (that one, for my money, is worth the admission price alone), and discounted pricing on their on-line study programs and exams, among other benefits.

In addition to offering cred-building certifications (such as the The French Wine Scholar Study & Certification Program and several Master-Level programs for regions like Burgundy, Bordeaux and Languedoc-Roussillon), FWS also coordinates wine immersion study trips throughout France. I’m particularly interested in the latter, as anyone who knows 1WD knows that I’ve long espoused that to really understand wine, book knowledge has to be combined with travel and tasting wine in its proper feet-in-the-vineyard context (butt-numbing plane rides be damned!).

Here’s how the giveaway will work, eligible to any reader who is of legal drinking age, and is not possessed by a parasitic alien being controlling their every thought and action while biding its time to try to take over our planet:

  • Leave a comment on this post telling us what French wine region you’d most like to visit and/or learn more about, and why.
  • You’ll have until Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 8PM ET, after which I will draw the names of five (!) lucky winners who will each receive a one-year FWS membership.

By the way, for me the answer is now Champagne – have never been there, and in retrospect that seems… just… silly that it hasn’t happened yet. Followed closely by Corsica (Vermentino FTW, beeatches!) and Burgundy (because… well, duh!). Can’t wait to see what you all come up with for this.

Cheers – and good luck!

ClubW.com Giveaway Winner, Discount Code (And Hitting The Wine Competition Trail)

Vinted on May 14, 2013 binned in giveaways, going pro

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the ClubW.com giveaway, and special thanks to ClubW.com for offering up the loot! The giveaway is officially closed, and our randomly-selected winner is…

Jeff Eckles!

Jeff noted that he’d like to try some of the wines on offer from ClubW, specifically the 2007 Chateau de Mattes-Sabran Dionysus Corbieres, the 2012 Banyan Creek Gewurztraminer
and the 2009 Domaine de Milliere VDP Vaucluse Rouge. And so now he’ll get the chance to do that (for about $0.00, I suspect).

For those of you who aren’t Jeff, but are interested in checking out ClubW.com, they are also offering a discount code to you for being a 1WD reader (and yet, most of you benefitting from that will have paid me $0.00 for all of my work in reporting wine to you all of these years… the irony!). The code is “4111wine” (minus the quotation marks, naturally) and comes with a $13 value for signing up (basically one free bottle of vino). To redeem the code, just access ClubW.com from here and enter 4111wine into the Voucher/Referral box when checking out with your order.

Enjoy!

While we’re together here, I’ll also take the opportunity to report on a few 1WD-related happenings (humor me, okay?)…

ClubW.com Wine Club Giveaway (And Discount Code)!

Vinted on May 7, 2013 binned in giveaways

“It’s the tiiiiiime, for the seeeeeaaason of… giveawaaaaaaaaaays….”

It does indeed seem to be the season of giveaway action here on 1WD, and this week we’ve got another one; I’m teaming up with ClubW.com to giveaway one month’s free subscription to their wine club (that’s three bottles, or about $50 worth)! We’ll also be announcing a discount code next week (so that those who play along and don’t win won’t have to wail and gnash their wine-stained teeth).

Living in the Communistwealth of Pennsylvania, I’m unable to indulge in activities that threaten the stability of the state, such as receiving a wine from a wine club. But make no mistake, I adore our enlightened Harrisburg dictators! Honest! Please, don’t bulldoze my home!

Anyway, ClubW.com happens to be one of the wine clubs that I wouldn’t at all mind checking out, given that their wine curators have picked some very interesting selections, all of which are $19 or under. The ClubW selections include capable, off-the-beaten-path producers like Colorado’s Infinite Monkey Theroem (remember them? I do, because they impressed me when I tasted their wares in CO last year), as well as other wine brands that I’ve been following for a little while now, like Tuscany’s Poggiotondo, and Yarra Valley’s Innocent Bystander (headed up by Giant Steps pioneer Phil Sexton). They also have wines I’ve liked from John Duval and Casas del Bosque (the latter of which really kicked ass in `07 with their Private Reserve blend).

One of the most interesting aspects of ClubW.com is that it offers you subsets of their selections based on a taste profile that you fill out before signing up for the service. So, in this giveaway, we’re going to explore, in practice, how it works…

New York Wine Expo 2013 Giveaway (And Discount)!

Vinted on January 29, 2013 binned in giveaways, wine industry events

Once again, I’m partnering up with the New York Wine Expo to help try to get some of you lushes to this annual – and seminal – Right Coast tasting event in the Galleria at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in NY.

This is a big shindig, and one in which you’ll have the opportunity to taste 600 (!) or so wines from 200+ (!) global exhibitors. For a bit more of your hard-earned money, there are also optional seminars on topics such as California Pinot Noir, Italian cheeses, and Cool Climate Finger Lakes wines.

But one of you won’t have to shell out their hard-earned money to go to NYWE this year, and many more of you will shell out less than the sticker price!

I’m happy to announce that one lucky 1WD reader will receive a free ticket to the event’s Grand Tasting on either Friday March 1st, 6pm-10pm (an $85 value) or Saturday March 2nd, 1pm-5pm (a $95 value) – it’ll be winner’s choice!

And if you play along and don’t win, fear not – when we announce the winner next week, we’ll also be giving you a discount code that’s good for $15 off Friday and/or Saturday tickets (if ordered on or before Feb. 28, 2013)!

Here’s how it will go down:

  • Leave a comment on this post telling us (that’s the royal us), which wines, producers or regions you’re most looking forward to trying at the tasting (here’s a list of who will be pouring) and why. You’ll have until 5PM ET on February 4th, 2013 to leave a comment.
  • On February 5th, I will announce a randomly selected winner from the comments, and will also reveal the discount code that can be used for those who didn’t win but still want to save some dough when they purchase tickets.

If you’re planning on going (and you should, as it will give your wine tasting IQ a seriously rapid boost), check out my survival guide for getting through big tasting events alive (Hint: Spit!).

Cheers – and good luck!
