in wine mini-reviews

  • 06 Bastianich Tocai Plus (Colli Orientali): Dense, structured, rich, a honeycomb w/out the sugar. Further proof of Fruili's potential. $66 A #
  • 06 Bastianich Calabrone (Colli Orientali): What Merlot & Refosco taste like after they shrivel up & are carried to heaven by cherubs. $55 A- #
  • 07 Liberty School Chardonnay (Central Coast): Lovely pineapple & pear, but that finish is toasted (in multiple senses of the word). $12 C #
  • 07 Liberty School Cuvee (Central Coast): Impressive amounts of balance, spice & bright red fruit for an unoppressive chunk of change. $12 B- #
  • 07 Liberty School Syrah (Central Coast): Bursts out of the gate w/ pepper & plum, but kind of stumbles en route to the 'finish' line. $12 C+ #
  • 08 Bastianich Vespa Bianco (Colli Orientali): A deciever, at 1st minerals & lemon, then it's all stone fruits, lush & almost honeyed. $35 B+ #
  • 08 Domaine Georges Trichard Chenas (Beaujolais): A red berry cobbler with a dash of black & white pepper to keep you on your toes. $17 B+ #
  • 06 Lieff Auberge Road Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford): Prunes & sweet dried fig, but they're served on a rubberized plate. $50 B #
