Weekly Wine Quiz: Banking On Uruguay?

Vinted on April 5, 2013 binned in wine quiz

Bienvenidos – and, as I’ll explain in just a moment, adios – to the Weekly Wine Quiz!

This week, I’m preparing to head back down South of the equator, this time to Uruguay to tour its budding (from a global market perspective) wine regions. And so this week’s quiz is a bit of a brain-wrangler about the Uruguay’s wine scene (maybe it will help me learn something new before I haul my butt down there!).

This week, we’re also bidding farewell to the Weekly Wine Quiz series here on 1WD. It’s been a good run – well over a year – and a fun one, but the increase in my paying gigs (more on those coming soon… stay tuned) means that something has to give time-wise, and that something is the (gratis) republishing of the weekly quiz. I’ll still be penning this series, and it will still be free to access, but from here on out you’ll just need to subscribe to the awesome wine newsletter The Juice to read it (and look, if you’re not already a subscriber… what the hell are you waiting for?!??).

True or False: Uruguay’s wine growing regions resemble those of Bordeaux’s Right Bank?

A.  True
B.  False

Cheers – and good luck!

Vinted on March 29, 2013 binned in wine quiz

Welcome to the Weekly Wine Quiz!

This week, we are finishing up the series of questions focusing on Argentine wine (I’ve recently returned from a two week jaunt down there to judge in the 2013 Argentina Wine Awards), all of which originally appeared in the newsletter The Juice. And we’re ending our S. American run with a tricky one… which red wine grape rules Argentina?

What is Argentina’s most-planted red wine grape?
A.  Malbec
B.  Bonarda
C.  Cabernet Sauvignon
D.  Merlot
E.  Tempranillo

Cheers – and good luck!

Weekly Wine Quiz: Before Malbec Domination

Vinted on March 22, 2013 binned in wine quiz

Welcome to the Weekly Wine Quiz!

This week, we are continuing a run of questions about Argentine wine (I’ve recently returned from a two week jaunt down there to judge in the 2013 Argentina Wine Awards), all originally appearing in the newsletter The Juice. And of course, we cannot really talk about Argentine wine without at some point getting into it with this grape…

Mendoza is well known for Malbec, but what grape varieties comprised the dominant plantings before the expansion of Malbec?

A.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
B.  Sauvignon Blanc and Ugni Blanc
C.  Tempranillo and Grenache
D.  Cereza and Criolla Grande

Cheers – and good luck!

Weekly Wine Quiz: Flying High Again

Vinted on March 15, 2013 binned in wine quiz

Welcome to the Weekly Wine Quiz!

This week, we’re continuing a short run of questions about the Argentine wine biz, since I’ve recently returned from a two week jaunt down there (courtesy of Wines of Argentina) to judge in the 2013 Argentina Wine Awards (much more to come on all of that jazz soon). And we’re quoting Ozzy. Because we can. Anyway, these questions will all have originally appeared in the newsletter The Juice, but you already knew that, right?

Flying High Again: Argentina’s vineyards are planted up to about what elevation?

A.  4000 feet
B.  7000 feet
C.  10,000 feet
D.  12,000 feet

Cheers – and good luck!
