This week on 1WD, it’s the time of year when we honor the memory of my late grandmother Lucille, a breast cancer survivor who succumbed to Alzheimer’s when in her 90s, and whose birthday I’d be celebrating in August if she were still alive today.
And so I’m one again asking you to please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association and help end this terrible disease. Let’s kick Alzheimer’s ass!
To help sweeten the deal (aside from the sweet goodness of the karma points given to you by the Universe for your donation, I mean), I will randomly select one of the donators to receive a new, un-played copy of ZinZig, The Wine Tasting and Trivia Board Game (about a $42 value). I got it as a sample for possible review, and the ZinZig folks probably had no idea that I’d end up using their product like this. But… since it’s a board game that my five year old daughter cannot play, there’s little chance of me getting to use it any time soon (which is a shame, because it looks pretty damn fun, and it’s an additional excuse to drink…).
The giveaway will be open to donations made today through August 20, 2013 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT. To be eligible, your donation needs to be made using the links provided here.
So… get your donation in for a chance to get your wine gaming on!
Cheers – and THANK YOU!
I’ve been churning out content on 1WineDude.com for about five years, and over the last year or two articles have been posted here just about five days a week.
Total cost to you, aside from your time and smarties, is somewhere around $0.00.
But today… Today, I’m asking you to pay up. But not to me.
Today I’m asking you to pay it forward and donate to the Alzheimer’s Association in the name of my grandmother Lucille, a breast cancer survivor who succumbed to Alzheimer’s when in her 90s, and whose birthday I’d be celebrating this week if she were still alive.
$5 is the minimum donation. That’s it – five bucks to help make the world a better place in the future, five bucks to pay it forward so that someone else’s family will have grandparents who remember their faces and names until the day that they die, and not have their memories robbed from them by Alzheimer’s. And as you’re helping to make a difference, you might win something, too…

I wrote a few years ago about links between moderate wine drinking and lower instances of dementia. This is because, at the time, my grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She died from it, at the age of 96 – but the truth is, she was all-but-dead years before that, bedridden and unable to care for herself, or recognize us. Caring for her placed an almost unbearable emotional toll on my family.
Under the definition of “pain” in the dictionary, there ought to be something like “having an elder family member who you’ve known your entire life look back at you with a worried, frightened stare because she doesn’t know who you are.” I would LOVE for my family to be one of the last who ever had to go through that. That’s wishful thinking, of course – but it doesn’t mean we can’t help move forward the day when we talk about the very last Alzheimer’s victim ever in the past tense.
So I’m once again asking you to prove how awesome you are by donating to help KICK ALZHEIMER’S ASS!
YOU can help, you need to help, and it’s easy. Just surf on over to the Help 1WineDude Kick Alzheimer’s Ass donation page, and make a donation. You can donate as little as $5 [ insert reference to skipping one cup of over-priced coffee at your fave coffee chain shop here ] – take a look at the inset pic from the donation page to see how easy it is. It will take you something like 2 minutes (unless you’re drunk, then it might take a bit longer).
A little (evil) voice inside your head might be telling you it’s okay to wait, or to skip out, because surely someone else who’s reading this will donate anyway. But waiting or skipping out is for chumps – and you’re awesome, which means you’re no chump! By the way, if the evil voice is telling you other stuff, like “go rob a bank,” then you might want to speak to a professional (very soon)…
Become a fan on Facebook. Tweet the hell out of links to the donation page. But most importantly, please donate now! Wine-related? Nope. But it will make you feel good (and it’s cheaper than a bottle!).
Cheers… and THANK YOU!
By most counts, 2009 was a great year for 1WineDude.com.
The blog won some awards. I got interviewed – quite a lot. The blog was featured in some cool places. I got to contribute to some great publications (like CNBC and Mutineer Mag). And getting mentioned in Yahoo! Tech news and the L.A. Times was really cool.
I’ve got this ugly, nagging feeling of “so much left undone” when it comes to one effort in 2009 that had special meaning for me.
Simply put, the progress on my initiative to Help Kick Alzheimer’s Ass has been really, really disappointing.
Let’s make one thing very clear right off the bat: I did NOT push the Help Kick Alzheimer’s Ass initiative as hard as I should have. And for the most part, 1WineDude.com readers were FANTASTIC at spreading the word on the initiative on Facebook and twitter. And some very, very generous people have donated to the cause.
But the Alzheimer’s Association has been a total FAIL when it comes to helping me promote this fundraiser, and we have a LONG WAY to go before we reach our fundraising goal.
So, I’m starting 2010 by asking you a favor.
If everyone who visited this blog donated a dollar, we’d reach our fundraising goal in less than one month.
Become a fan on Facebook. Retweet links to the donation page. But most importantly, please donate a dollar.
Cheers… and THANK YOU!
