the Bio

Joe Roberts is a Philadelphia-area musician and performer, specializing in extended-range fretted and fretless electric bass, the Australian didgeridoo, and the Native American flute, among other things.  He has been playing and recording in the greater Philadelphia area for over 15 years.  And no, he is not going to tell you how old he is.  Joe is also a card-carrying "Wine Snob" and has the WSET certification to prove it!

In 1998, Joe co- founded the band FourWood, which re-defined the West Chester, PA-area live music scene with their energetic stage show, acoustic/electric flexibility, and now-legendary marathon sets.  FourWood continued to gain popularity until disbanding in 2003.

Praise for FourWood: "This band is phenomenal! They've got enough energy onstage to supply a large city for a week. Never still, and members interchanging often, they are a visual frenzy (controlled). And, their music is out of this world (sent there by all that energy I would imagine). A truly entertaining evening out - honestly." - 302Underground.com

Joe's musical career reflects the diversity of his influences: over the last two decades, he has performed and / or recorded with various cover bands and original music acts (with guest appearances at charity benefits and countless jams & 'sit-ins'), and has been a guest docent at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia (lecturing on Postmodernism in contemporary popular music).

Most recently, Joe has been laying down the bottom (both bass and didgeridoo) for acclaimed original singer-songwriter Steve Liberace, both live and in the studio.  Career highlights with the Steve Liberace Band:

  • Voted into the Top 5 Philly bands (out of hundreds of local submissions) in the 2006 regional "Have A Nice Gig" contest (sponsored by Saturn, Phily's Q102, & Bon Jovi).
  • Performed at major Philadelphia venues including The Electric Factory, First Union Center / First Union Spectrum (for Philadelphia Sixers, Wings, & Phantoms sporting events), North Star Bar, and artist showcase Milkboy Coffee House.
  • Music featured on Philadelphia's WXPN 88.5 FM.
